Trinity A1, A2, B1 and B2 test practice (GESE)

GESE is Trinity College London's speaking and listening exam: a short conversation with one examiner. The UK Home Office accepts three grades for family visas, settlement and citizenship, and Trinity has announced a fourth, Grade 7, for the B2 settlement rule that starts on 26 March 2027. Choose your grade to practise the examiner's questions for free.

Other tests for the same visas

The UK Home Office accepts more than one test at each level. We also have free practice for IELTS Life Skills, which is taken with an examiner and a second candidate, and for PTE Home, which is taken alone on a computer, and for LanguageCert, another conversation with one examiner. Compare the four tests.

Questions

What is Trinity GESE?
GESE stands for Graded Examinations in Spoken English. It is a one-to-one speaking and listening exam from Trinity College London. Three of its grades are accepted by the UK Home Office as secure English language tests: Grade 2 (A1), Grade 3 (A2) and Grade 5 (B1). Trinity has also announced Grade 7 (B2) for settlement applications from 26 March 2027.
Which GESE grade do I need?
Trinity lists Grade 2 for family applications at level A1, Grade 3 for extending a family visa, and Grade 5 for settlement and British citizenship. For settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027, most routes need B2, and Trinity has announced Grade 7 for that. Check GOV.UK for your own route before you book.
How is GESE different from IELTS Life Skills and PTE Home?
All three test speaking and listening only. GESE is a short conversation with one examiner and no other candidate. IELTS Life Skills is taken with an examiner and a second candidate. PTE Home is taken alone on a computer and marked by computer.
Are these practice tests free?
Yes. All the GESE practice tests on this site are free and need no account.
Is this site connected to Trinity?
No. This is independent practice material. GESE is an exam of Trinity College London.
