LanguageCert A1, A2 and B1 test practice (SELT)
LanguageCert's Speaking and Listening test is a short conversation with one examiner, in four parts. The UK Home Office accepts it at A1, A2 and B1 for family visas, settlement and citizenship. Choose your level to practise every part for free: questions about you, role plays, the picture or discussion task, a listening task and your own short talk.
LanguageCert A1 practice (Preliminary)
For family partner and parent visas that need A1, and some work routes such as Representative of an Overseas Business.
8 to 9 minutes · 4 parts · 2 practice tests
LanguageCert A2 practice (Access)
For extending a family partner or parent visa after 2½ years in the UK.
9 to 11 minutes · 4 parts · 2 practice tests
LanguageCert B1 practice (Achiever)
For indefinite leave to remain (settlement) and British citizenship.
11 to 13 minutes · 4 parts · 2 practice tests
How it is marked
LanguageCert's handbook lists five things: listening and responding, interaction and task, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation and fluency. Listening and responding carries a third of the marks. You need 60 out of 100 to pass, at every level.
Other tests for the same visas
The Home Office accepts more than one test at each level. We also have free practice for IELTS Life Skills, PTE Home and Trinity GESE. Compare the tests.
Questions
- What is the LanguageCert Speaking and Listening test?
- It is LanguageCert's secure English language test (SELT) of speaking and listening only, at A1, A2 or B1. It is a short one-to-one conversation with an examiner, in four parts, and the UK Home Office accepts it for family visas, settlement and citizenship.
- Which level do I need?
- LanguageCert lists A1 for family partner and parent visas and some work routes, A2 for extending a family visa after 2½ years, and B1 for indefinite leave to remain and British citizenship. For settlement applications made on or after 26 March 2027, most routes need B2. Check GOV.UK for your own route before you book.
- How is it different from IELTS Life Skills, PTE Home and Trinity GESE?
- All four test speaking and listening only. LanguageCert and Trinity GESE are conversations with one examiner. IELTS Life Skills is taken with an examiner and a second candidate. PTE Home is taken alone on a computer and marked by computer. LanguageCert is the only one of the four with a picture task and a listening task where the examiner reads you a short talk.
- Where do I take it?
- At a LanguageCert test centre approved for UK visas. LanguageCert describes the exam as a short online conversation with a live examiner, and asks you to arrive 30 minutes early with valid photo ID.
- Is there reading or writing?
- No. The test checks speaking and listening only. In Part 4 you may make notes on paper, but the notes are not marked.
- What is the pass mark?
- 60 out of 100 at every level. LanguageCert's handbook marks five things: listening and responding, interaction and task, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation and fluency. The result is Pass or Fail.
- When do I get my result?
- LanguageCert says a provisional result is available within a few minutes and the official result in 3 working days. For a UK visa, the certificate can be used for 2 years from the test date.
- How much does it cost?
- LanguageCert says the fee varies by country and currency. Check the price on its booking page.
- Are these practice tests free?
- Yes. All the LanguageCert practice tests on this site are free and need no account.
- Is the practice marked?
- No. A web page cannot mark a conversation. You hear each question, answer out loud and compare your answer with an example. In Part 4a, the page checks your answers to the three questions. If your browser can listen, it also shows the words it heard.
- Is this site connected to LanguageCert?
- No. This is independent practice material. LanguageCert is a business name of PeopleCert Qualifications Ltd.
