About us
About TestWise Prep
TestWise Prep is an independent practice site for people preparing for an English test or a citizenship test, usually for a visa, a university place or settling in a new country. Most of what we offer is free: every IELTS Listening and Reading mock test, every UK visa English practice test and every citizenship practice test.
Who the site is for
- IELTS candidates who want full timed tests with a band estimate straight away, plus feedback on their Writing and Speaking.
- People applying for a UK visa, settlement or British citizenship who must pass a speaking and listening test at A1, A2 or B1 (IELTS Life Skills, PTE Home, Trinity GESE or LanguageCert) and want to know exactly what happens in the room before they pay for the real test.
- People preparing for the Life in the UK test or the Canadian, US, Australian or New Zealand citizenship test.
- Teachers and institutes, who can register free and follow their students' scores.
How our practice tests are made
Every question, recording script, picture and example answer on this site is our own. We never copy real exam papers, and we do not claim that any question has appeared in a real test. We draft material with the help of AI tools, then check each test against the official format before it goes live: the number of parts and questions, the timings, the task types and the level of the language.
These are the sources each section is checked against:
| Exam | Checked against |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic and General Training | the published IELTS test format and band descriptors |
| IELTS Life Skills A1, A2 and B1 | the official Life Skills sample tests and format pages |
| PTE Home A1, A2 and B1 | Pearson's PTE Home pages and its test specification |
| Trinity GESE Grades 2, 3, 5 and 7 | Trinity College London's GESE specifications |
| LanguageCert SELT A1, A2 and B1 | LanguageCert's SELT pages, practice papers and handbook |
| Citizenship tests (UK, Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand) | each government's official study guide and test information |
| UK visa English levels | GOV.UK guidance and the Immigration Rules |
Pages that depend on official rules, such as fees, levels and booking steps, show the date we last checked them. Rules change, so always confirm on the official site before you book or apply.
How scores work
- IELTS Listening and Reading: your number of correct answers out of 40 is turned into a band using the widely published IELTS conversion ranges. The official tables vary a little between test versions, so the band is an estimate.
- IELTS Writing and Speaking: an AI marker scores your answer against the four public IELTS band descriptors for that task and explains each score. You can read a sample Writing report and a sample Speaking report before you pay anything.
- UK visa speaking tests: the practice tests time each step and, in Chrome or Edge, show which words of your spoken answer the browser heard. They cannot judge pronunciation the way an examiner does, so treat them as practice, not a pass or fail prediction.
No practice score is an official result. Only the test provider can give you that.
What is free and what is paid
Listening, Reading, the UK visa English tests, the citizenship tests and all guides are free, with no account needed to start. AI marking of IELTS Writing and Speaking costs money because each check costs us to run: $15 for 5 checks, or $12 a month for up to 30. See pricing and our refund policy.
We are independent
TestWise Prep is not part of, approved by or endorsed by the British Council, IDP, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, Pearson, Trinity College London, LanguageCert, the Home Office or any government. Their names appear only to say which test a page helps you practise for.
