Other tests for the same visas
The UK Home Office accepts more than one test for each level. If you would rather speak to an examiner than to a computer, IELTS Life Skills covers the same three levels, and we have free practice tests for A1, A2 and B1. Trinity College London's GESE is a third option, taken with one examiner at a centre in the UK: see our Trinity GESE practice tests, or our LanguageCert practice tests. Compare the four tests.
Questions
- What is PTE Home?
- PTE Home is a group of three speaking and listening tests from Pearson (A1, A2 and B1) that the UK Home Office accepts as secure English language tests for family visas, settlement and citizenship.
- Which PTE Home level do I need?
- Pearson lists A1 for a first family visa, A2 for extending a family visa after two and a half years, and B1 for settlement and British citizenship. Check GOV.UK for your own route before you book.
- How is PTE Home different from IELTS Life Skills?
- Both test speaking and listening only and give a pass or a fail. PTE Home is taken alone on a computer and marked by computer. IELTS Life Skills is taken face to face with an examiner and one other candidate.
- How long is each PTE Home test?
- Pearson describes each level as a single computer-based test that you complete in up to 30 minutes at a test centre.
- Is there reading or writing in PTE Home?
- No. All three PTE Home tests assess speaking and listening only.
- How is PTE Home marked?
- By computer, with no examiner. The result is a pass or a fail, and Pearson says results usually arrive within 48 hours.
- Are these practice tests free?
- Yes. All the PTE Home practice tests on this site are free and need no account.
- Are the practice tests marked?
- Partly. If your browser can listen (Chrome and Edge can), it shows which words of a sentence it heard and whether your short answers were right. It cannot judge your pronunciation or fluency the way the real test does, so treat it as practice, not a predicted result.
- Is this site connected to Pearson?
- No. This is independent practice material. PTE and PTE Home are trademarks of Pearson.
