Since the pandemic, working from home has become normal in many industries. While some people argue that it benefits both staff and employers, others believe it creates more problems than it solves. In my view, remote work is valuable, but it works best when combined with some time in the office.

Supporters of home working point first to the time and money it saves. An employee who no longer commutes for an hour each way gains ten hours a week, which can be spent with family or on exercise. Companies benefit too, since they can rent smaller offices and recruit talented people who live far from the city. Many workers also say they concentrate better at home, away from the constant interruptions of an open-plan office.

On the other hand, critics argue that remote work weakens teamwork and training. Quick conversations that solve problems in minutes can turn into long chains of emails, and new employees in particular may struggle to learn from experienced colleagues they rarely see. Some people also find it hard to separate work from home life, which can lead to longer hours and loneliness.

In my opinion, both sides make valid points, which is why a hybrid model is the most sensible solution. If staff spend two or three days a week in the office, they keep the benefits of collaboration and mentoring, while still enjoying more flexibility and less commuting.

In conclusion, working from home clearly has advantages for employees and companies, but it also creates real challenges. A balanced approach that combines home and office working is likely to bring the greatest benefits for everyone.
