Today, many children spend more time looking at phones and computers than playing outside. Although technology offers some benefits, I believe this trend is largely negative for children's health and development.
It is true that screens are not entirely harmful. Educational apps and videos can make learning more engaging, and the internet gives children access to information that previous generations could only find in libraries. Online games and messaging also allow children to stay in touch with friends, which became especially important during the pandemic.
However, the disadvantages are more serious. The most obvious concern is physical health. Children who spend hours sitting in front of a screen get less exercise, and doctors in many countries have linked this to rising levels of childhood obesity. Outdoor play also develops skills that screens cannot, such as coordination, balance and the confidence to take small risks. Secondly, heavy screen use can affect sleep and concentration, particularly when devices are used late at night, and this can have a knock-on effect on performance at school. Finally, children who play outside together learn to share, negotiate and solve disagreements face to face, which are social skills that are harder to develop online.
For these reasons, parents and schools should encourage a healthier balance, for example by setting daily time limits and making sure children have regular opportunities to play outdoors.
In conclusion, while technology can support learning and friendship, the shift away from outdoor play is mainly a negative development because it affects children's physical health, sleep and social skills.
