IELTS Writing Task 2: Free university education

In some countries, governments pay for university education, while in others students must cover their own tuition fees. Although free higher education has some drawbacks, I believe its advantages clearly outweigh them.

The main disadvantage is cost. Universities are expensive to run, and if tuition is free, the money must come from taxes. This means that people who never attend university help to pay for those who do, which some consider unfair. In addition, when education is free, some students may enrol without being fully committed, and dropout rates can rise, wasting public money.

However, the benefits are more significant. Most importantly, free education gives talented students from poorer families the same opportunities as wealthier ones. When fees are high, many capable young people either avoid university altogether or graduate with debts that affect their choices for years. Removing fees therefore allows people to choose courses based on their abilities rather than their bank balance. Society also benefits, because a highly educated workforce attracts investment, drives innovation and pays more tax over a lifetime. Countries such as Germany and Finland, which offer free or very cheap university education, have strong economies and high levels of social mobility.

The problem of cost can also be reduced without charging students directly, for example by limiting the number of places in some subjects or linking funding to course completion.

In conclusion, although free university education places a burden on taxpayers, the benefits for individuals and for society as a whole are greater. I therefore believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
