IELTS Writing Task 2: Online vs classroom learning

The growth of the internet has made it possible to study almost any subject online. Some people believe that this is just as effective as learning in a classroom, while others argue that face-to-face teaching is essential. I believe that online learning can be highly effective for some learners, but that classroom teaching remains important, especially for younger students.

Those who support online study emphasise its flexibility. Adults with jobs or young children can study in the evening or at weekends, at their own pace, and can replay a difficult lecture as many times as they need. Online courses are also often cheaper and allow students to learn from experts anywhere in the world. For motivated learners studying subjects such as programming or languages, the results can be excellent.

On the other hand, many people believe that face-to-face teaching offers things that a screen cannot. A teacher in the same room can notice when a student looks confused and immediately explain in a different way. Classroom learning also provides structure and routine, which many students need in order to stay motivated; completion rates for online courses are often very low. Practical subjects, such as science experiments or medical skills, are also difficult to teach effectively without hands-on experience.

In my view, the best option depends on the learner. Experienced, self-disciplined adults can learn very successfully online, but children and teenagers benefit greatly from the guidance, discipline and social contact of a classroom. Many schools and universities now combine the two, which seems to me the most effective approach.

In conclusion, online learning offers flexibility and convenience, but it cannot fully replace the support that classroom teaching provides, particularly for younger learners.
