Trinity B1 test practice 3: GESE Grade 5
An example topic about your home town, then a conversation about music and recent personal experiences.
How to use this test. The real exam is a 10-minute conversation with one examiner, so the questions will not be exactly these. Press a button to hear each question, answer out loud in your own words, then look at the example. Practise with a friend as the examiner if you can.
Topic phase
up to 5 minutesYou bring your own topic, with five points written on a topic form. The examiner asks about at least four of them, in any order. Here is an example. Use it to see how much to say, then make a form for a topic of your own.
Example topic form
My home town
- Where it is
- What it looks like
- What people do there
- What I miss
- My next visit
Where it is
You could say: My home town is in the north of my country, near the mountains. I lived there for twenty years.
The examiner might ask: How far is it from the capital city?
What it looks like
You could say: It is small, with a lot of old houses and a busy market in the centre.
The examiner might ask: Has it changed since you were a child?
What people do there
You could say: Many people work on farms, because the land is good. Not very many work in offices.
The examiner might ask: What did your parents do?
What I miss
You could say: I miss the food and my neighbours. I haven't been back since I came to this country.
The examiner might ask: Do you still talk to your old neighbours?
My next visit
You could say: I think I will go next summer. I'd rather go for a month than for a short holiday.
The examiner might ask: Who will you visit first?
Your question to the examiner. You must ask at least one about your topic, for example: “Have you ever been to my country?”
Conversation phase
up to 5 minutesThe examiner chooses two of the six subject areas. This test uses music and recent personal experiences.
Music
The examiner chooses this subject area. Give a reason, and try to use the past, the future and a preference.
What kind of music do you like?
Have you ever been to a concert?
Have you ever learned to play an instrument?
Do you prefer listening to music alone or with other people?
Do you think your children will like the same music as you?
Recent personal experiences
The examiner chooses this subject area. Give a reason, and try to use the past, the future and a preference.
What have you done this week?
Have you been anywhere interesting recently?
Have you learned anything new this year?
How long have you lived in your present home?
What will you do next weekend?
Now ask the examiner a question
At Grade 5, Trinity requires at least one question about your topic, and at least one about a subject area. Say one of these out loud, or make your own:
- What music do you listen to?
- Have you been anywhere interesting recently?
- Have you ever lived in a small town?
