Trinity B1 test practice 1: GESE Grade 5
An example topic about a job in a care home, then a conversation about festivals and means of transport.
How to use this test. The real exam is a 10-minute conversation with one examiner, so the questions will not be exactly these. Press a button to hear each question, answer out loud in your own words, then look at the example. Practise with a friend as the examiner if you can.
Topic phase
up to 5 minutesYou bring your own topic, with five points written on a topic form. The examiner asks about at least four of them, in any order. Here is an example. Use it to see how much to say, then make a form for a topic of your own.
Example topic form
My job in a care home
- What I do every day
- Why I chose this job
- The people I work with
- A difficult day
- My plans for the future
What I do every day
You could say: I help older people to get up, wash and have breakfast. I've done this job for two years.
The examiner might ask: Which part of the day is the busiest?
Why I chose this job
You could say: I chose it because I looked after my grandmother at home, and I like helping people.
The examiner might ask: Did you need any training before you started?
The people I work with
You could say: There are a lot of staff, and many of them have worked there for more than ten years.
The examiner might ask: Have you made any good friends at work?
A difficult day
You could say: Last winter a lot of staff were ill, so I worked twelve hours. I have never been so tired.
The examiner might ask: What did you do after that long day?
My plans for the future
You could say: I'd rather not stay a care assistant for ever. I think I will study to become a nurse.
The examiner might ask: How long will the course take?
Your question to the examiner. You must ask at least one about your topic, for example: “Have you ever visited a care home?”
Conversation phase
up to 5 minutesThe examiner chooses two of the six subject areas. This test uses festivals and means of transport.
Festivals
The examiner chooses this subject area. Give a reason, and try to use the past, the future and a preference.
What is the most important festival in your country?
Have you ever been to a festival in the UK?
Do you prefer big festivals or quiet family celebrations?
How will you celebrate the next festival?
How long does the festival last?
Means of transport
The examiner chooses this subject area. Give a reason, and try to use the past, the future and a preference.
How do you usually travel to work or to the shops?
Do you prefer travelling by bus or by train?
Have you ever travelled by plane?
Is there a lot of traffic where you live?
How do you think people will travel in the future?
Now ask the examiner a question
At Grade 5, Trinity requires at least one question about your topic, and at least one about a subject area. Say one of these out loud, or make your own:
- Which festival do you like best?
- How do you travel to work?
- Have you ever worked at night?
