Trinity B1 test practice 2: GESE Grade 5
An example topic about cooking food from your country, then a conversation about special occasions and entertainment.
How to use this test. The real exam is a 10-minute conversation with one examiner, so the questions will not be exactly these. Press a button to hear each question, answer out loud in your own words, then look at the example. Practise with a friend as the examiner if you can.
Topic phase
up to 5 minutesYou bring your own topic, with five points written on a topic form. The examiner asks about at least four of them, in any order. Here is an example. Use it to see how much to say, then make a form for a topic of your own.
Example topic form
Cooking food from my country
- How I learned to cook
- My favourite dish
- Finding ingredients here
- Cooking for other people
- What I want to do next
How I learned to cook
You could say: My mother taught me when I was twelve. I have cooked for my family since I was a teenager.
The examiner might ask: What was the first dish you learned to make?
My favourite dish
You could say: My favourite dish is lamb with rice, because it reminds me of family dinners at home.
The examiner might ask: How long does it take to prepare?
Finding ingredients here
You could say: I can find most things, but not many shops sell fresh herbs, so I grow a lot of them.
The examiner might ask: Where do you buy your spices?
Cooking for other people
You could say: I've just cooked for twenty people at my son's birthday. Everybody asked for more.
The examiner might ask: Do you prefer cooking for a few people or for many?
What I want to do next
You could say: I'd rather cook than work in an office, so I think I will open a small food stall one day.
The examiner might ask: What will you sell at your stall?
Your question to the examiner. You must ask at least one about your topic, for example: “Have you ever tried food from my country?”
Conversation phase
up to 5 minutesThe examiner chooses two of the six subject areas. This test uses special occasions and entertainment.
Special occasions
The examiner chooses this subject area. Give a reason, and try to use the past, the future and a preference.
How do you usually celebrate your birthday?
Have you been to a wedding recently?
What is the best present you have ever received?
What special occasion will you celebrate next?
Do you prefer giving presents or receiving them?
Entertainment
The examiner chooses this subject area. Give a reason, and try to use the past, the future and a preference.
What do you like watching on television?
Would you rather watch a film at home or at the cinema?
Have you seen any good films recently?
How much time do you spend on your phone for fun?
What will you do for fun this weekend?
Now ask the examiner a question
At Grade 5, Trinity requires at least one question about your topic, and at least one about a subject area. Say one of these out loud, or make your own:
- What did you do for your last birthday?
- What kind of films do you like?
- Have you ever cooked for a lot of people?
