LanguageCert A2 Speaking and Listening practice test 2
Questions about free time, family and holidays, role plays about a birthday and a train ticket, a picture of a station, a talk about Grace's town, and a talk about a place you like.
How to use this test. The real exam is a 9 to 11 minute conversation with one examiner, so the questions will not be exactly these. Press a button to hear the examiner, answer out loud in your own words, then compare with the example. Practise with a friend as the examiner if you can.
Questions about you
1½ to 2 minutesFirst, practise the start: say your full name, spell your family name, and say where you are from. Then answer these. In the exam the examiner asks three, one from each topic.
Free time
What do you do in your free time?
How often do you go to the cinema?
What did you do last Sunday?
Is there a sport you would like to try?
Family
How many people are there in your family?
Who do you look like in your family?
What do you do together as a family?
Where do your parents live?
Holidays
Where did you go on your last holiday?
Do you prefer holidays in the city or by the sea?
What do you always take on holiday?
Where would you like to go next year?
Role plays
about 1½ minutesIn the exam there are two situations. In the first, the examiner starts and you answer; in the second, you start. Each one is about two short turns each. Here are two of each kind.
The examiner starts
Situation 1
We're friends. I start.
“It's my birthday on Saturday. Would you like to come to my party?”
Situation 2
I'm a stranger at a train station. I start.
“Excuse me. Do you know which platform the London train leaves from?”
You start
Situation 3
I work at the station. You want to buy a ticket to Birmingham. You start.
Situation 4
I'm your manager. You need to leave work early today. You start.
Two pictures
1½ to 2 minutesThe examiner says: “Here's a picture of a train station. I have a different picture of a train station. Let's ask and answer questions about the two pictures. I start.” This is your picture. Practise saying what is in it, and think of questions to ask about the examiner's picture.
Listen and answer
2½ to 3 minutesThe examiner says: “I'm going to tell you about Grace and her town. I'll read it two times.” Read the three questions first. Play the talk, make notes, then play it a second time. Then answer each question out loud or type it.
Talk 1
Why did Grace move from London?
What is Grace's favourite place?
What is Grace going to buy?
Show the words
Grace lives in a small town by the sea in the south of England. She moved there from London two years ago because she wanted a quieter life. In summer the town is very busy with tourists, but in winter it is quiet and many cafés close. Grace's favourite place is the old library, which has a café on the top floor with a view of the sea. The only problem is the buses. There are only two buses an hour, so she is going to buy a bicycle.
Your talk
2 to 2½ minutes, with questionsThe examiner says: “Now you're going to talk on your own for one minute. Your topic is a place you like to go. You now have thirty seconds to write some notes.”
See example notes and an example talk
Example notes
- where it is
- when I go
- who with
- what I do there
- why I like it
Example talk: A place I really like is the big park near my house. It's about ten minutes on foot. I go there most weekends with my children, and sometimes after work in summer. The children play football and I sit and read or talk to other parents. There is also a small lake with ducks, and my daughter loves feeding them. I like the park because it's quiet and green, and it's free, so we can go as often as we want.
Follow-up questions
After your talk, the examiner asks a few questions about it.
Do you go there in winter too?
Is there anything you would change about it?
Where else do you like to go at the weekend?
