LanguageCert A2 Speaking and Listening practice test 1
Questions about work, shopping and weather, role plays with a neighbour and a shop, a picture of a market, a talk about Daniel's job, and a talk about your job or studies.
How to use this test. The real exam is a 9 to 11 minute conversation with one examiner, so the questions will not be exactly these. Press a button to hear the examiner, answer out loud in your own words, then compare with the example. Practise with a friend as the examiner if you can.
Questions about you
1½ to 2 minutesFirst, practise the start: say your full name, spell your family name, and say where you are from. Then answer these. In the exam the examiner asks three, one from each topic.
Work and study
What do you do?
What time do you start work?
What do you like about your job?
What did you study at school?
Shopping
Where do you usually buy food?
Do you like shopping for clothes?
What was the last thing you bought?
Do you prefer shopping online or in shops?
Weather
What's the weather like today?
What is your favourite season?
What do you do when it rains?
What was the weather like last weekend?
Role plays
about 1½ minutesIn the exam there are two situations. In the first, the examiner starts and you answer; in the second, you start. Each one is about two short turns each. Here are two of each kind.
The examiner starts
Situation 1
We're neighbours. I start.
“Hi. I'm going away for the weekend. Could you water my plants?”
Situation 2
I work at a hotel. You phone me. I start.
“Good morning, Park Hotel. How can I help you?”
You start
Situation 3
I work at a shop. You bought some shoes here, but they are too small. You start.
Situation 4
We're friends. You want to learn to drive and you want my advice. You start.
Two pictures
1½ to 2 minutesThe examiner says: “Here's a picture of a market. I have a different picture of a market. Let's ask and answer questions about the two pictures. I start.” This is your picture. Practise saying what is in it, and think of questions to ask about the examiner's picture.
Listen and answer
2½ to 3 minutesThe examiner says: “I'm going to tell you about Daniel and his job. I'll read it two times.” Read the three questions first. Play the talk, make notes, then play it a second time. Then answer each question out loud or type it.
Talk 1
Where did Daniel work before?
Why does Daniel know many of the passengers?
What does Daniel want to do next year?
Show the words
Daniel is a bus driver in Manchester. He started the job three years ago. Before that, he worked in a car factory, but he didn't like working inside all day. Now he drives the same route every morning, so he knows many of the passengers. His favourite passenger is an old woman who always says thank you and gives him a sweet. The only thing he doesn't like is the traffic on Friday afternoons. Next year he wants to learn to drive a coach, so he can take people on trips.
Your talk
2 to 2½ minutes, with questionsThe examiner says: “Now you're going to talk on your own for one minute. Your topic is your job or your studies. You now have thirty seconds to write some notes.”

Example notes
- what I do
- where and when
- what I like
- what I don't like
- the future
Example talk: I work as a cleaner in a hospital in Leicester. I started two years ago. I work early in the morning, from six until two, so I can collect my children from school. I like my job because the other cleaners are friendly and the work is important. Patients need a clean hospital. The thing I don't like is getting up so early, especially in winter when it's dark. In the future I'd like to train as a nurse's assistant, because I enjoy helping people.
Follow-up questions
After your talk, the examiner asks a few questions about it.
How do you travel to work?
Would you like a different job?
What did you want to be when you were a child?
What next?
