LanguageCert A1 Speaking and Listening practice test 2

Questions about your country and your friends, role plays at a hotel and at a bus stop, a picture of a classroom, a talk about Lena's new flat, and a talk about your home.

How to use this test. The real exam is a 8 to 9 minute conversation with one examiner, so the questions will not be exactly these. Press a button to hear the examiner, answer out loud in your own words, then compare with the example. Practise with a friend as the examiner if you can.

Part 1

Questions about you

about 1½ minutes

First, practise the start: say your full name, spell your family name, and say where you are from. Then answer these. In the exam the examiner asks three.

  • What time do you go to bed?

  • What is the weather like in your country?

  • What do you have for breakfast?

  • Tell me about your best friend.

  • How do you go to work?

  • What do you do in the evening?

Part 2

Role plays

about 1½ minutes

In the exam there are two situations. In the first, the examiner starts and you answer; in the second, you start. Each one is about two short turns each. Here are two of each kind.

The examiner starts

  1. Situation 1

    I work in a hotel. I start.

“Good evening. Can I help you?”

  2. Situation 2

We're in the same English class. I start.

“Can I use your pen, please?”

You start

  1. Situation 3

We're at a bus stop. You want to know the time. You start.

  2. Situation 4

We're friends. You want to go to the cinema. You start.

Part 3

Two pictures

1 to 1½ minutes

The examiner says: “Here's a picture of a classroom. I have a different picture of a classroom. Let's ask and answer questions about the two pictures. I start.” This is your picture. Practise saying what is in it, and think of questions to ask about the examiner's picture.

Part 4a

Listen and answer

2 to 2½ minutes

The examiner says: “I'm going to tell you about Lena and her new flat. I'll read it two times.” Read the three questions first. Play the talk, make notes, then play it a second time. Then answer each question out loud or type it.

  1. Talk 1

Which floor is Lena's flat on?

Why does Lena love the kitchen?

Where does Lena go every evening?

    Show the words

Hello, I'm Lena. I have a new flat. It is on the third floor, in a quiet street. The flat has a kitchen, a living room and one bedroom. I love the kitchen because it is big and has a window. There is no garden, but there is a park opposite my building. I go there every evening with my dog.

Part 4b

Your talk

about 2 minutes, with questions

The examiner says: “Now you're going to talk on your own for half a minute. Your topic is your home. You now have thirty seconds to write some notes.”

0:3030 seconds to make notes
0:3030 seconds: talk about your home
See example notes and an example talk
