LanguageCert A1 Speaking and Listening practice test 1
Questions about your day and your family, role plays in a café and a shop, a picture of a bakery, a talk about Omar's weekend, and a talk about your weekend.
How to use this test. The real exam is a 8 to 9 minute conversation with one examiner, so the questions will not be exactly these. Press a button to hear the examiner, answer out loud in your own words, then compare with the example. Practise with a friend as the examiner if you can.
Questions about you
about 1½ minutesFirst, practise the start: say your full name, spell your family name, and say where you are from. Then answer these. In the exam the examiner asks three.
What do you do in the morning?
Who do you live with?
What is your favourite colour?
Where do you go shopping?
What do you do at the weekend?
Tell me about your home.
Role plays
about 1½ minutesIn the exam there are two situations. In the first, the examiner starts and you answer; in the second, you start. Each one is about two short turns each. Here are two of each kind.
The examiner starts
Situation 1
I work in a café. I start.
“Hello. What would you like to eat?”
Situation 2
We're friends. I start.
“Do you want to go to the park tomorrow?”
You start
Situation 3
I work in a shop. You want to buy a bag. You start.
Situation 4
We're in the street. You want to find a bank. You start.
Two pictures
1 to 1½ minutesThe examiner says: “Here's a picture of a bakery. I have a different picture of a bakery. Let's ask and answer questions about the two pictures. I start.” This is your picture. Practise saying what is in it, and think of questions to ask about the examiner's picture.
Listen and answer
2 to 2½ minutesThe examiner says: “I'm going to tell you about Omar and his weekend. I'll read it two times.” Read the three questions first. Play the talk, make notes, then play it a second time. Then answer each question out loud or type it.
Talk 1
Where does Omar work on Saturday?
What does Omar do on Sunday morning?
Where does his grandmother live?
Show the words
My name is Omar. On Saturday I work in a restaurant in the town centre. I start at twelve o'clock and I finish at eight. On Sunday I don't work. I play football with my friends in the morning, and in the afternoon I visit my grandmother. She lives near the station. We drink tea and we talk.
Your talk
about 2 minutes, with questionsThe examiner says: “Now you're going to talk on your own for half a minute. Your topic is what you do at the weekend. You now have thirty seconds to write some notes.”
