IELTS Writing Task 2: Working abroad

A growing number of skilled professionals, such as doctors and engineers, are moving abroad for work. While this brings benefits for the individuals and the countries that receive them, I believe it is largely a negative development for the home countries they leave behind.

For the professionals themselves, working abroad offers clear advantages. They can often earn several times more than at home, gain experience with advanced technology, and provide a better standard of living for their families. Host countries, such as the United Kingdom and Canada, also benefit, as foreign-trained doctors and nurses help to fill serious shortages in their health services. In addition, many workers send money home, which supports their relatives and contributes to the economy of their home country.

However, the loss of skilled workers, often called the 'brain drain', can seriously harm the countries they leave. Training a doctor is expensive, and in many cases this is paid for by the government. When these professionals move abroad soon after qualifying, their home country loses both the investment and the service. In some parts of Africa and South Asia, there are now too few doctors to meet basic healthcare needs, while large numbers of doctors trained there work in wealthier countries.

To reduce this problem, home countries could improve salaries and working conditions for professionals, while wealthy countries could avoid actively recruiting health workers from countries that face shortages themselves.

In conclusion, working abroad benefits individual professionals and host countries, but for many developing countries, the loss of skilled workers is a serious problem. Overall, therefore, I consider it a negative development.
