IELTS Writing Task 2: Prison or education

Crime is a concern in every society, and people disagree about how best to reduce it. Some believe that longer prison sentences are the most effective solution, while others argue that there are better methods. Personally, I believe that education and rehabilitation are more effective in the long term, although prison remains necessary for serious offenders.

Supporters of longer sentences argue that they protect the public by keeping dangerous criminals off the streets. They also believe that the threat of a long sentence discourages people from committing crimes in the first place. For victims and their families, a long sentence can also provide a sense that justice has been done.

However, many experts argue that prison alone does not solve the problem. Research in many countries shows that a large proportion of prisoners reoffend soon after release, often because they leave prison with no qualifications, no job and no support. Prisons can even make matters worse by bringing young offenders into contact with more experienced criminals. In contrast, programmes that offer education and job training in prison have been shown to reduce reoffending, because they give people a realistic alternative to crime. Tackling the root causes of crime, such as poverty, lack of education and drug addiction, can also prevent crimes before they happen.

In my view, the best approach combines both methods. Violent criminals must be kept in prison to protect the public, but for most offenders, education and rehabilitation offer a better chance of preventing future crime.

In conclusion, although longer prison sentences may deter some crime and protect the public, they are not enough on their own. Investing in education and rehabilitation is a more effective way to reduce crime in the long run.
