IELTS Writing Task 2: Living in big cities

Around the world, more and more people are leaving rural areas to live in large cities. City life offers a number of important advantages, but it also has some significant drawbacks.

The main advantage of living in a big city is opportunity. Cities offer a far wider range of jobs than the countryside, often with higher salaries, which is the main reason many people move there. They also provide better access to services, such as specialist hospitals, universities and good schools. In addition, cities offer a greater variety of entertainment and culture, from restaurants and theatres to sports events, as well as the chance to meet people from many different backgrounds.

However, city life also has several disadvantages. The most obvious is the high cost of living. In cities such as London, New York or Mumbai, rents are so high that many people spend a large part of their income on housing, and some are forced to live in small or overcrowded accommodation. Secondly, cities are often noisy, crowded and polluted, and long daily commutes in heavy traffic can cause stress and reduce the time people spend with their families. Finally, despite being surrounded by people, some city residents feel lonely, as they may not know their neighbours and lack the close community found in many villages.

In conclusion, big cities offer better jobs, services and entertainment, which explains why so many people choose to live in them. However, these benefits come at the cost of high living expenses, pollution and, for some, isolation. Whether city life is the right choice therefore depends largely on each person's priorities.
