Answer this question

How to approach it

  1. This question asks for a judgement, so say in the introduction which side is stronger.
  2. Give more space to the side you think is stronger: here, two paragraphs of advantages and one of disadvantages.
  3. Repeat your judgement clearly in the conclusion, using the words of the question.

English has become the main language of international business, science and tourism, and it is studied in schools almost everywhere. Although this development has some drawbacks, particularly for smaller languages, I believe its advantages are considerably greater.

The principal benefit of a shared language is that it makes communication across borders far easier. A Brazilian engineer, a Japanese supplier and a German client can hold a meeting without interpreters, which saves both time and money. The same is true in science, where researchers publish their findings in English so that colleagues around the world can read and build on them. For individuals, a good command of English opens the door to study abroad and to better-paid jobs.

Travel is another area where a common language helps. Tourists can ask for directions, read menus and deal with emergencies in countries whose language they do not speak, and this makes people more willing to explore unfamiliar places and meet those who live there.

There are, however, real disadvantages. As English spreads, minority languages may fall out of use, and when a language disappears, the stories and knowledge it carries are often lost with it. Native speakers of English also enjoy an unfair advantage in international careers, while everyone else must spend years learning it. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced if schools continue to teach and value local languages alongside English.

In conclusion, while the dominance of English puts pressure on other languages and favours those who speak it from birth, the gains in trade, research and personal opportunity are greater. In my view, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages.

Common mistakes with this question

  • Listing advantages and disadvantages without saying which is greater. The question asks you to judge.
  • Giving both sides exactly equal space and then choosing one in the last line, which looks unconvincing.
  • Writing about why English is easy or hard to learn, which is not what the question asks.
