IELTS Writing Task 2: Ageing population

In many countries, people are living longer and having fewer children, so the proportion of older people in the population is rising. This trend creates several problems, but there are also practical solutions.

The most serious problem is financial. As the number of retired people grows, governments must spend more on pensions, while there are relatively fewer working people paying taxes to fund them. In Japan, for example, almost a third of the population is over sixty-five, which puts enormous pressure on public finances. A second problem is the demand for healthcare and care services. Older people are more likely to suffer from long-term illnesses, and hospitals and care homes in many countries are already struggling to find enough staff.

Several measures could help. Firstly, governments could gradually raise the retirement age, since people now remain healthy and able to work for longer than in the past. Encouraging flexible or part-time work for older employees would also allow them to keep contributing to the economy while enjoying more free time. Secondly, countries could make it easier for skilled workers from abroad, such as nurses and care workers, to fill shortages. Finally, investing in preventive healthcare, such as programmes that encourage regular exercise and healthy eating, would help people stay independent for longer and reduce the demand for expensive treatment.

In conclusion, an ageing population places pressure on pension systems and healthcare services. However, by extending working lives, welcoming skilled workers from other countries and promoting healthy lifestyles, governments can reduce these problems considerably.
