IELTS Writing Task 2: Social media and teenagers

Many teenagers now spend several hours every day on social media. Although these platforms offer some genuine benefits, I believe that, at this level of use, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Social media certainly has positive aspects. It allows teenagers to stay in contact with friends and family, including those who live far away, and it can help young people who feel isolated to find others with similar interests. Some teenagers also use platforms creatively, for example by sharing their art or music, or to learn about current events and social issues.

However, when use extends to several hours a day, the negative effects become more significant. Firstly, there is growing evidence of a link between heavy social media use and anxiety and low self-esteem, particularly among teenage girls. Constantly comparing themselves with carefully edited images of other people's lives can make young people feel that they are not good enough. Secondly, time spent scrolling is often time taken away from sleep, homework, exercise and face-to-face friendships, all of which are important for healthy development. Many teenagers check their phones late at night, which affects both their sleep and their concentration at school the next day. Finally, social media exposes young people to risks such as cyberbullying and harmful content.

The benefits of social media could be kept while reducing these risks if teenagers used it for shorter periods and parents and schools taught them to use it critically.

In conclusion, while social media helps teenagers to connect and express themselves, spending several hours a day on it has serious effects on their mental health, sleep and studies. The disadvantages therefore outweigh the advantages.
