Answer this question

See a sample report to find out what you get. Marking is paid: from $0.40 a check on the monthly plan, or 5 checks for $15.

How to approach it

  1. One paragraph for salary and one for enjoyment, each with a reason and an example.
  2. A strong opinion separates 'enough money' from 'more money'. This avoids a simple either-or answer.
  3. Keep examples realistic, such as rent, family costs or a stressful job.

Choosing a career is one of the most significant decisions a person makes, and people have different priorities when they do so. For some, the size of the salary is what counts, whereas others would accept less money for work they enjoy. In my opinion, a reasonable income is essential, but beyond that point job satisfaction matters more.

It is easy to understand why many people put salary first. Money pays for housing, food and children's education, and in expensive cities an average wage may not cover these basic costs. A well-paid job also offers security, since it allows a person to save for emergencies and retirement. From this point of view, enjoyment is a luxury, and work is simply a way of providing for one's family.

Others argue that no salary can make up for a job that makes a person unhappy. Most adults spend around forty hours a week at work, so someone who dislikes what they do is dissatisfied for a large part of their life. Stressful or boring jobs can harm health and relationships. By contrast, people who find their work interesting tend to be more motivated, to perform better and, in many cases, to be promoted, so that their income rises in any case.

I believe that both sides are right up to a point. Nobody can enjoy a job if they are constantly worried about paying the rent, so earning enough to live comfortably must come first. However, once that level has been reached, extra money adds little to happiness, while meaningful work, friendly colleagues and time for family add a great deal.

In conclusion, salary is important because it provides security, but it should not be the only consideration. I would advise young people to look for work that pays adequately and that they are glad to do each morning.

  • Confusing 'salary', 'wage' and 'income'. Salary is monthly pay for a professional job.
  • Repeating the words of the question in the introduction. Paraphrase it.
