  • why you chose it

and explain how the person felt when they received it.

You have one minute to prepare and should speak for one to two minutes.

Sample answer

About 234 words, or roughly two minutes of speaking.

I'm going to talk about a photo album I made for my grandmother on her eightieth birthday last year.

My grandmother has always been the centre of our family, and I wanted to give her something more personal than the flowers or chocolates she usually receives. She'd often said that she had lots of old photographs but that they were scattered in boxes and drawers, and many of them were fading.

So, about two months before her birthday, I secretly collected as many photos as I could from different relatives. I scanned them, restored some of the damaged ones on my laptop, and then arranged them in order, starting with her wedding and ending with pictures of her great-grandchildren. Next to each photo, I added a few lines about where it was taken, and I asked family members to write short messages to her, which I included at the end.

When she opened it at her birthday dinner, she was completely speechless at first, and then she started telling stories about every single picture. She kept the whole table entertained for about an hour. She told me afterwards that it was the most thoughtful present she'd ever received, and she keeps it on the table next to her chair. It made me realise that the best gifts don't have to be expensive; what really matters is the time and thought you put into them.

Why this works: it covers every point on the card in order, gives specific details and a short story rather than general statements, and ends by explaining the feeling or reason, which the last line of the card asks for.

Rounding-off question

After you finish, the examiner may ask one short question, such as:

Do you enjoy choosing gifts for people?

Part 3 questions: Gifts and consumerism

In Part 3, the examiner asks more abstract questions linked to the cue card topic. Give an opinion, explain why, and add an example.

Why do people give gifts on special occasions?

Mostly to show that they care about someone and to mark an important moment. In many cultures, gift-giving is also a social expectation, so people might feel awkward arriving at a wedding or birthday empty-handed.

Do you think people spend too much money on gifts nowadays?

In some cases, yes. Advertising creates pressure to buy bigger and more expensive presents, particularly at festivals. I think many people would actually prefer something smaller but more personal, or even an experience, like a meal together.

More questions to practise

  • Is a handmade gift more valuable than a bought one?
  • How does advertising influence what people buy?
  • Why do some people buy things they don't really need?
  • Do you think online shopping will replace shops completely?

Now say it out loud

Reading a good answer helps, but speaking is what improves your band. This set includes this cue card, Part 1 questions on shopping and friends, and a Part 3 discussion.
