What to expect in Listening Part 2

In Part 2 you hear one speaker giving information in an everyday social situation: a guide describing a museum, a radio presenter talking about a new park, or a manager explaining arrangements to new members.

There is nobody asking questions for you, so you have to follow the talk yourself. The speaker moves from one topic to the next, and the questions follow the same order.

Multiple choice and matching are common here, and so is labelling a plan or a map. The options rarely use the speaker's exact words. You hear one thing and have to recognise the same idea written differently.

Tips for Part 2

  • Read the options before you listen. You have a short time to look at the questions. Use it to underline the words that make each option different from the others.
  • Expect all the options to be mentioned. In multiple choice the speaker often talks about every option. Only one answers the question that was asked.
  • Listen for the same idea in other words. "Open to everybody" in the question may be "anyone is welcome" in the recording.
  • On a map, find the starting point first. Then follow the direction words: opposite, next to, at the far end, on your left as you come in.
  • If you miss one, move on. The talk does not stop. Guess, and get ready for the next question.

Questions

What is IELTS Listening Part 2?
A talk by one speaker in an everyday social situation, such as a description of local facilities or arrangements for an event. It has 10 questions, numbered 11 to 20.
What question types come up in Part 2?
Often multiple choice, matching, and labelling a plan, map or diagram. Completion questions can appear too.
Why is Part 2 harder than Part 1?
There is only one speaker, so there are no questions and answers to guide you, and the options are written in different words from the ones you hear.
Can I hear the recording twice?
Not in the real test: each recording is played once only. Our part practice lets you replay it, so you can go back and hear what you missed. Turn to a full test when you want exam conditions.
Do these practice tests come with answers?
Yes. Press "Check these answers" under each group of questions to see which are right, the correct answer, and the words from the recording that prove it. At the end you get an estimated band for the part.
